Hello! I'm Brett Loie.
I bet you probably weren't expecting to see a photo of a girl, right? I get that a lot! My father named me after the Ernest Hemingway novel, The Sun also Rises, and as much as I sometimes wished for a more feminine name growing up, I adore my unique name now. I'm originally from a tiny village in Northern Michigan, but I now call Los Angeles my home. I'm really into hiking, consuming massive amounts of tacos, and exploring places all over California (current favorite places: Malibu & Palm Springs). I live in an apartment full of plants with my plant obsessed boyfriend and my pride and joy, a chubby cat named Ducky.
I got into photography when I was taking classes in college, and I needed to fulfill an art requirement. I took a film photography class, and then I just accidentally took every single photography class the college offered. I WAS HOOKED. I spent every day in the photo lab, and I created so many amazing memories through making photographs. Weddings were an accident too, but I fell in love with documenting such an important part of a couple's history together.
To me, photographs will always be the most sacred way to record our history. I own one image from my grandparent's elopement, a black and white still of them kissing after they made it official. Even though both of them are no longer alive, I can feel all their love and souls come to life in that one photograph. That moment would have been lost to everyone else in the world, but it exists forever now because of photography. I think that's pretty freakin' cool, and it is such an honor to be able to call myself a preserver of memories.
My grandparents, 1954.
